Welcome to the Mensa Romania site !

Mensa is an international society founded in 1946 in Oxford, Great Britain with the purpose of identifying people of exceptional intelligence and putting them in touch with one another.

The only qualification necessary for admission into Mensa is to obtain, in an approved and correctly administered intelligence test a score in the top 2% of the general population . In other words membership is open to all who have an IQ (Intelligence Quotient) in the 98-th percentile of the general population.

The purposes of Mensa, as defined by its constitution are:
• To identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity
• To encourage research related to human inteligence
• To provide a stimulating intellectual and social enviroment for its members

Mensa does NOT have any ideological, political or religious affiliations and may not express as an organisation any point of view regarding these matters (of course members may and are encouraged to express strictly personal points of view). Mensa is a not-for-profit organisation, funded mainly through the contributions of its members. Generally it neither seeks nor accepts sponsorship.

The members of Mensa come from all walks of life: from truck drivers to university professors with multiple PhDs, from programmers and scientists to firemen, from people living on welfare to millionaires. For extra details on what IQ is and the activities of Mensa, please consult the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section.

Currently the organization numbers about 100,000 members in over 100 countries of the world. Mensa is divided into national chapters, each of them having its own set of rules established by their members. There are 3 types of chapters: national, provisional and emerging. The difference between them is given by their internal organization, the number of members etc. The biggest chapters are still in the Anglo-Saxon countries like Great Britain (about 30,000 members) and the US (about 43,000), but there are rapid developments in countries on all continents.
